Medieval Best Seller: The Book of Hours
Popular for over three hundred years, the Book of Hours was the "bestseller" of the Middle Ages. More Books of Hours survive from the mid-thirteenth to the mid-sixteenth centuries than any other cultural artifact. Medieval life -- and death -- cannot begin to be understood without examining this devotional work that everyone owned and virtually knew by heart. Mr. Wieck's talk -- illustrated with slides -- will explore the texts and pictures that made these books so ubiquitous.
